Not forgotten…
Microsoft is still on track to offer its own anti-virus product, according to the chief of its security business unit.
It has been a year since Microsoft
announced the acquisition of anti-virus technology
from Romanian AV manufacturer GeCAD Software – and, since then, all has gone rather quiet on the Microsoft AV front.
This week, however, Microsoft reaffirmed its intention to offer its own AV product – and clarified that the software will be offered for purchase as a standalone product, not bundled with Windows.
This is good news for other anti-virus vendors – a statement issued by Symantec read “Symantec is happy to hear that [Microsoft plans] to compete fairly with a fee-based, standalone offering.”
A time frame for the release of Microsoft’s anti-virus software has yet to be revealed.
