IBM sees huge rise in kit-build scam sites.

Phishing watchers at

IBM

‘s

X-Force

research team have recorded an enormous burst of phishing activity in the last seven days, with over 114,000 new sites appearing in the week from 11 – 18 June.

The vast majority of the new sites appear to have been created using some kind of kit or automation, with single domains carrying an average of 1,000 fraud sites each. Only 0.2% of the phishing sites seen seemed to have been created manually as one-off attacks.

Country codes used to register the fraudulent sites were dominated by .hk, .tw and .cn, with Hong Kong, Taiwan and China accounting for more than half of all the new sites spotted.
