Latest Storm barrage offers site memberships

New tactic provides logins to special-interest sites.

The ‘Storm’ attack has changed tactic yet again, with the latest set of spams providing login details to a wide selection of sites covering various interests. Once visited, the sites try to trick victims into downloading the latest version of the trojans used to infect more systems and add them to the growing zombie network.

The spammed mails pose as welcome messages from a diverse range of sites, including dating, gambling, job hunting, humour, food and drink, pets, music, software and photography. Addressing a ‘new member’, they provide a set of login details and a link to a site identified only by IP address. Visiting the site brings up a message claiming that a ‘login applet’ is required to enter, and downloading and running the applet leads to infection on unprotected systems.
