20 products rated in large-scale detection tests.
Testing organization
AV-Comparatives
has revealed the results of its latest on-demand test.
Top-rated products include
Trustport
,
F-Secure
,
Bitdefender
,
Avira
,
eScan
,
Kaspersky
and
McAfee
, all rated ‘Advanced+’, with
G Data
,
Avast
,
Panda
,
ESET
,
Microsoft
,
Symantec
and
Sophos
rated ‘Advanced’. Products from
Qihoo
(a newcomer to the test),
PC Tools
and
AVG
were labelled ‘Standard’, and
K7
,
Webroot
and
Trend Micro
brought up the rear with the ‘Tested’ mark. This is the third low-ranking result in a row for
Trend Micro
.
Top detection rates were recorded by dual-engine products from
G Data
and
Trustport
, both spotting more than 99% of over 400,000 recent samples used in the test. Also doing well were
Avast
,
Panda
and
F-Secure
with over 98%. The lowest scorers were
K7
and
Webroot
, both of which missed well over 10% of samples.
McAfee
aced the false positive test with no issues, while
Microsoft
was the only other vendor in the ‘very few FPs’ category, with just a single false alarm. Most other products had 15 or less, putting them in the ‘few’ category, while
G Data
,
Panda
,
Avast
,
ESET
and
Webroot
had between 18 and 22 false alerts, earning them a ‘many’ rating. The worst offenders in this measure were
Qihoo
, with 104, and
Trend Micro
with a massive 290. This knocked down the vendor’s overall rating despite reasonable detection rates in the malware sample sets.
The test also included a scanning speed measure, which showed
Avast
way out in the lead and
Panda
,
K7
and
Webroot
also doing well.
PC Tools
and
Microsoft
got the lowest ratings here. As with all its tests,
AV-Comparatives
recommends reading the full report to get the most out of the results; it can be found on
