As part of VB2020 localhost we were proud to co-host the Threat Intelligence Practitioners’ Summit (TIPS), put together by the Cyber Threat Alliance. In a series of blog posts we highlight some of the talks presented in the Summit and the important contribution of threat intelligence sharing.
Despite the fact that globalisation continues apace, the cybercrime ecosystem is not the same across all parts of the world – particular areas and regions have their own peculiarities and specific issues.
The Threat Intelligence Practitioners’ Summit featured two presentations looking at the issues of particular geographical areas: the DACH region and Latin American countries.
Abdelkader Cornelius of
Recorded Future
has spent almost 15 years researching cybercrime and the underground economy in the DACH region – where the cybercrime ecosystem differs from the more well-known cybercrime economies, even those not so far away in Eastern Europe.
Abdelkader presented “German Angst: Cybercrime Ecosystem in the DACH Region”, in which he gave a detailed insight into the emergence and development of the German-speaking cybercrime economy.
Meanwhile, Latin America has long been known as a hotbed for cybercrime, but prior to Q3 2019 the number of ransomware victims seeing a significant impact in LATAM was low. However, that changed at the end of 2019, leaving many victims under-prepared.
In “Ransomware Evolution in LATAM” Fernando Cajeme Acosta Zertuche and Imelda Flores, of
TELMEX Scitum
, discussed what they have seen of the TTPs of the attackers in the region, the preferred attack vectors, what they have found during the incident response engagements, and their own strategy for making sure future victims are prepared.
