AV-Test releases latest results

Business and consumer products achieve high pass rate.

Independent testing lab

AV-Test.org

has released its latest batch of test results, with 23 consumer products and eight business solutions covered in two separate reports. All but one of the products taking part did well enough to earn certified status.

The testing system covers a wide range of metrics, including static detection, ‘Real World’ protection tests, performance and false positive measures, and cleanup tests. The tests are split into three categories, and each category is scored out of a maximum 6 points; the three scores are added together and a total of 11 (from a possible 18) is required to achieve certification.

In the consumer tests, only

Total Defense

‘s

Internet Security Suite

fell below the cut-off, missing it by some way with just 8.5 points.

ESET

‘s

Smart Security

just made the grade for certification, on a bare minimum 11 thanks to a poor showing in the cleanup part of the test.

Webroot

‘s

SecureAnywhere

also had trouble with cleanup, scoring 11.5, as did

K7 Total Security

with 12 points in total.

Norman

‘s

Security Suite

and

Microsoft Security Essentials

also scored 12, with their biggest issues in the detection and protection section, while

Avast Free AntiVirus

,

McAfee Total Protection

(both scoring low in the cleanup section),

PC Tools Internet Security

(with generally mediocre scores) and

Qihoo 360 Antivirus

(hit hard in the usability section thanks to high levels of false positives) all scored 12.5.

A little more comfortable were

Bullguard

,

GFI VIPRE

and

Panda

‘s

Cloud Antivirus

on 13 points, and

Panda

‘s

Internet Security

and

Trend Micro

‘s

Titanium

on 13.5.

Avira

and

AVG

‘s free edition did a little better with 14 points, while

AVG

‘s full suite scored a fairly respectable 14.5, and

G DATA

‘s

Internet Security

and

Symantec

‘s

Norton

made it to 15 points.

BitDefender

and

F-Secure

‘s

Internet Security

products both did well with 15.5, but way out in the lead came

Kaspersky

‘s suite with a near perfect 17.5 out of 18.

The business test saw

Trend Micro

at the bottom of the class, with a lowly 11 for its

Office Scan

and 11.5 for its

Worry-Free Business

solution, while

McAfee

‘s

VirusScan

also only managed 11.5 points, all three struggling with the cleanup sections of the test.

Microsoft

‘s

Forefront

didn’t fare much better with 12.5, scoring low in the detection and protection section, while Endpoint solutions from

Sophos

and

Symantec

both put in solid showings with 14.

F-Secure

did well again with another 15.5 for its

Client Security

, and once more well ahead of the pack was

Kaspersky

on 17.5.
