Big Blue purchase sparks rumours of more mergers.
When massive cross-sector IT giant
IBM
bought
Internet Security Systems
for a rumoured $1.3 billion last week, it joined the list of monster corporations looking to embed themselves further in the security sphere. Following on from
EMC
‘s purchase of
RSA
a few months ago, the move has sparked a torrent of rumours about other companies looking to invest in security firms.
Other IT leviathans like
HP
and
Oracle
have been suggested as potential buyers, with larger security firms such as
Symantec
,
CA
and
McAfee
most commonly mentioned as potential targets for acquisition. Meanwhile,
Microsoft
‘s spread in the security direction is also expected to continue. Further down the chain, larger companies left unabsorbed are expected to start mopping up the many smaller, more specialized companies, in a general consolidation of the industry.
