AOL worker accused of selling customer email lists offered deal.
A former AOL employee charged with
selling the company’s customer email list
to spammers has been offered a plea deal, it is reported. In exchange for entering a ‘guilty’ plea, it is believed that prosecutors will recommend a fine and up to two years in prison for defendant Jason Smathers.
24-year-old AOL engineer Jason Smathers stands trial for stealing at least 92 million screen names from AOL’s database and selling the information to an associate, 21-year-old email marketer Sean Dunaway.
Smathers is scheduled to appear in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York later today.
