Acquisitions and new product lines

UK-based web and email filtering company

SurfControl

revealed plans last month to acquire California-based email security firm

MessageSoft Inc.

The company will pay $9.69 million for MessageSoft initially, with an additional $5 million to be paid by the end of the year, dependent on sales. In acquiring MessageSoft, SurfControl will gain access both to the American company’s technology and to its Chinese sales and distribution operation.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) appear to be flavour of the month amongst anti-spam and security firms at the moment. While

Sophos

launched its anti-virus and anti-spam solution for SMEs – Sophos Small Business Suite – in the middle of April,

CipherTrust

and

Mirapoint

chose to launch their SME products at the London Infosecurity exhibition at the end of the month. Even

IBM

has joined the SME party, announcing its managed services for small and medium businesses which include scanning incoming and outgoing emails for viruses and spam.
